December 7, 2007 – Richmond Hill, Ontario – Scientific Reviews Find Polycarbonate Plastics Safe:  Bisphenol A is not a risk to human health

With recent media reports presenting speculation of a perceived health risk concern regarding polycarbonate bottles and bisphenol A (BPA), the Canadian Bottled Water Association (CBWA) and its members understand the confusion many consumers are experiencing at this time. The CBWA would like to present the facts relating to this important issue to allow consumers to make their personal choices based on sound-science rather than fear of speculation.

Polycarbonate has been supported for many decades as a safe packaging material of choice by food and beverage industries, health official agencies and government regulatory bodies worldwide. As recently as January 2007, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), after completing an extensive, independent expert panel review of all new scientific data from the past five years concluded that bisphenol A does not pose a risk to human health at the trace levels present in consumer products. The EFSA findings were confirmed by independent expert panels in both the United States and Japan. Polycarbonate plastic water bottles have been deemed safe packaging for food products.

The CBWA welcomes the science based assessment of bisphenol A announced in May by Health Canada and look forward to their decision based on an analysis of all the relevant science.Contact:
